Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need a consultation?

There is a process to finding solutions and drawing up a support plan for your young person, and it starts with getting clear on what the main problem/s are.

Perhaps you just feel overwhelmed and you can’t quite put your finger on why your child might be struggling at school.

It helps to vent a bit, express how you feel, identify some of the real issues that are causing distress or stress in your child’s life, look at progress or the lack thereof, try to find the missing puzzle pieces…and that’s my job.

Chatting with you, helps me to piece together the puzzle and find what’s missing or where the pieces are bent or broken.

What can I expect from a consultation with you?

Usually during this initial meeting, I listen more and talk less.

I want to hear from you, what you are feeling, what you are experiencing, what a day in the life of your child looks like, and if you are struggling to express or think of specifics, I might probe with some leading questions to help unlock the information.

I can lend an objective ear and give honest feedback and advice, based on literally years of working with parents just like you.

Each one has a different story, but the patterns are similar and the solutions are not too distant. We just need to find them.

What should I bring along with me?

You are welcome to bring examples of your child’s school work, school reports or copies of previous reports or assessments from an occupational therapist or psychologist, if they are not older than 2 years.

You are also welcome to bring a partner, co-parent or parent along to support you..

How long is the session?

I usually block off 30 minutes, but if we need more time, we can always schedule a follow up appointment.

Where does the session take place?

My office is located in Walmer, Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha but very often I consult online using Google Meet, which makes things a lot easier, especially if you travel a lot or struggle to take time off of work.

Does my child need to attend this consultation?

It is entirely up to you, however, if we are needing to discuss sensitive matters, it might be better to meet separately.

High schoolers might prefer to come along as well, to see what it is all about, but the choice is yours.
